Falling Forward – Day 6 – Serenity > Control

Acceptance of what has happened is the first step to overcoming the consequences of any misfortune.

Reflection

I am highly competitive, and one of life’s lessons has been learning that not everything is mine to win, fix, or control.

Recently, I found myself praying for a friend who had gone down the wrong path in life. The problem was, I wanted God to answer those prayers my way.

Eventually, my prayer changed. I stopped asking for my way, or even my friend’s way, and began accepting God’s way.

And lo and behold, peace showed up, even though my friend continued down the wrong path.

One of the greatest lessons recovery taught me is the power of acceptance.

People, things, and situations can change without my prior approval. Just look at the trees turning red around me. They didn’t ask my permission either. 😊

Acceptance isn’t approval. It’s choosing serenity over control.

We waste tremendous energy fighting realities we cannot change.

What happened, happened.
The diagnosis came.
The relationship changed.
The opportunity disappeared.
The season ended.

Once we stop demanding that yesterday be different, we can finally ask a much better question:

God, what do You want me to do today?

Soul Search

What reality am I still fighting that I may need to accept?

“I have learned to be content whatever the circumstances.”
