Falling Forward – Day 22 – Puppy Love

Having a dog will bless you with the happiest days of your life and one of the worst days.

Reflection

A couple of days ago, our yellow Lab, Luckie, crossed the Rainbow Bridge. He was 11½ years old.

I’ve now said goodbye to eight dogs in my lifetime. It never gets easier. The opening quote is so true.

For more than fifty years, I’ve had a dog by my side. Each one has been special, with its own personality. But Luckie somehow combined the best, and occasionally the wildest, traits of them all.

He came to us as an out-of-control rescue who nearly wore us out. In fact, two other families had already rejected him. Eventually, he learned our boundaries, although having twenty acres of woods and prairie to roam certainly helped.

And maybe that’s the point of today’s writing.

Be yourself.

Unlike nature, which willingly moves through God’s changing seasons, we humans often struggle to embrace who God created us to be.

Luckie never had that problem. He was a dog. No social media. No comparisons. No pretending to be something he wasn’t.

He was energetic, protective, loving…especially toward our special guy, Jordy…and remarkably intuitive about the weather. He started fretting six hours before a tornado struck our area a couple of years ago. And he always alerted us when rain was coming.

But above all, Luckie was love.

He simply wanted to be loved. And once he found it, he never stopped giving it away.

I suspect those first two families were looking for something other than a dog overflowing with unbridled energy and affection.

Their loss. Our blessing.

Sometimes I write to make a point. Other times, I write to work through something.

Today is the latter.

A whole lot of nothing about a whole lot of something.

Because that something was love.

And Luckie gave us eleven and a half years of it.

Soul Search

Maybe there’s a lesson in that for all of us. Be who God created you to be. Love without holding back. And leave the world a little better because you were here.

Rest easy, Luckie. You were one of a kind…a Fruit of the Spirit kind…But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness (Galatians 5:22).
