Faith Over Fear – Day 44 – Addiction

Addiction is the only prison cell where the lock is on the inside.

Reflection

A few weeks ago, I shared part of my addiction story during a leadership workshop. Afterward, a woman approached me in tears and said, “My brother is still battling.” We both knew the truth—only one person holds the key to that lock.

Addiction devastates lives. It often begins in fear of not being enough, of facing reality, or through innocent choices that spiral. Some may be predisposed, but no one is immune. And once it takes hold, it defies logic. You know the right choice…yet feel powerless to make it.

The stigma associated with being labeled an addict is a very real fear all of us addicts experience.

My journey and today’s reality…

I had willpower but couldn’t stop. Each morning I promised myself I would, and within an hour, I broke that promise.

Addiction stripped me mentally, physically, and spiritually.

It turned me into someone I never wanted to be.

Addiction is a disease—chronic, not cured, but managed daily. For 38+ years, my path has been simple: walk with God, do the next right thing, stay active, and follow wise counsel. I’m free…as long as I don’t pick up…one day at a time.

For the addict…

  • Get professional help. You can’t do this alone.
  • Seek God…true healing is spiritual.
  • Surround yourself with those living sober.
  • Avoid triggers: people, places, habits.
  • Focus on today…just stay sober today.

For those supporting an addict…

  • Don’t trust active addiction; it distorts truth.
  • You can’t change them…they must choose help.
  • Pray constantly…for them and for yourself.
  • Get support. Protect your own health.

For everyone…

Pray.

Light always overcomes darkness.

Soul Search

If you’re struggling, have you been trying to fight alone instead of seeking help from God and others?

If you love someone battling addiction, are you trying to control the outcome or trusting God while protecting your own health?

John 8:12, “I am the light of the world…whoever follows me will never walk in darkness.”
