THE LIE
“I have to earn God’s love through my performance.”
“REFLECTION
Performance-based love is the only kind many of us have known.
We learned early to earn approval through achievement, behavior, or usefulness. So we carry that template into our relationship with God and exhaust ourselves trying to be good enough for His grace. But grace, by definition, cannot be earned. The moment it becomes a reward, it ceases to be grace at all.
The moment grace becomes a reward, it ceases to be grace at all.
God’s love for you is not a score on a chart. It is not dependent on your quiet time streak, your church attendance, or how well you handled yesterday’s temptation.
…and this piece of crap sinner is very thankful that’s the way it is…just sayin. 😊
SOUL SEARCH
- In what ways do you try to earn God’s love or approval?
- Ask Him to show you one place where you can simply receive His grace without striving.
But God demonstrates His own love for us in this: While we were still sinners, Christ died for us. — Romans 5:8
