THE LIE
“I have to be strong for everyone else. My own pain doesn’t count.”
REFLECTION
The ‘strong one’ carries a particular burden. They are the steady presence in every crisis, the one others lean on, the one who never seems to need anything.
But everyone has limits and needs. The lie that your pain doesn’t count is a form of self-abandonment, and it eventually produces resentment, burnout, and collapse.
I was taught in early recovery that we must first take care of ourselves before we can be of any good to others.
FACTS
Jesus withdrew from the crowds to rest and pray. He was not weak for doing so — He was wise.
Your needs are no less a priority than everyone else’s.
SOUL SEARCH
When did you last allow yourself to be ministered to rather than being the one ministering? Ask God to send someone to care for you, and practice receiving it without deflecting.
Come to me, all you who are weary and burdened, and I will give you rest. — Matthew 11:28
