THE LIE
“I need to have it all together before I can trust God completely.”
REFLECTION
Control and trust are inversely proportional.
The tighter we grip our circumstances, the less room there is for faith.
We tell ourselves we’ll trust God once we understand the plan, see the outcome, or feel more secure.
I did that for almost five years with my addiction problem.
That isn’t trust; it is conditional faith dressed up in spiritual language.
Fact
Trust, by definition, involves releasing what we cannot control to One who can be trusted with it.
God does not ask us to have it all together before we come to Him. He asks us to come as we are… confused, afraid, uncertain…and to trust Him in the midst of it.
I write from experience.
SOUL SEARCH
What area of your life are you most reluctant to release to God? Ask Him what specific fear is at the root of that control. Then pray a prayer of surrender, even if the feelings don’t follow immediately.
Trust in the Lord with all your heart and lean not on your own understanding. — Proverbs 3:5
