Reflection
Defeat has a way of stripping everything down to what’s real. It burns off the parts of us that were only ever performance… the image we were managing, the story we were telling ourselves… and leaves us standing in front of the truth. That’s terrifying. It’s also, strangely, where the real work of becoming begins.
That happened to me thirty-nine years ago at about this time. My addiction disorder had taken me to my knees, and what I felt at the time to be my biggest defeat I ever faced turned into my biggest victory because it forced me to dig deep and really understand myself, as understanding myself is a critical key to keeping my addiction problems at bay.
There is no better teacher of the resilience we hold inside ourselves than when we face defeat but refuse to be defeated.

What is the defeat that taught me the most about who I really am?
James 1:12, “Blessed is the man who remains steadfast under trial, for when he has stood the test he will receive the crown of life, which God has promised to those who love him.”
