For years, the Christmas season would serve me up a hefty dose of sadness sprinkled with self-pity.
There were various reasons for this which I won’t get into with this writing.
Then everything changed.
In the early stages of 2012, I recall the day when I received the inevitable news that the new pharmacy owners were moving the pharmacy we once led to a nearby city.
The pharmacy was founded in 1938 and initially located on the southwest corner of the main intersection of Covington, Ohio.
It was your typical “corner drugstore.”
We turned that “corner drugstore” into a highly respected institutional pharmacy with a national presence through vision, much work, perseverance, and diligence.
The move of the pharmacy would serve devastating tax revenue consequences to our little village as we had evolved into its biggest employer.
I was also about to lose a considerable chunk of rental income because we owned the building they were vacating.
Although these were “1st world problems,” I was down.
The “surroundings” of that moment caused me much sadness and the 2012 holiday season was but a few months away…which meant more sadness.
Then a spirit inside me said, “Use the old pharmacy space to feed my people.”
Long story short, on December 15, 2012, several dozen friends, family members, and old pharmacy teammates delivered happiness in the form of a bountiful Christmas dinner to the less fortunate.
It was so refreshing to bring happiness to others.
A few days after the event, I noticed that the annual bout of “Christmas Season Sadness” had disappeared and, to date, has never reappeared.
The moral of the story…don’t seek your happiness from the world; seek it from Him by helping His people.
Isaiah 58:10, “If you pour yourself out for the hungry and satisfy the desire of the afflicted, then shall your light rise in the darkness and your gloom be as the noonday.”
