Whipping Fear – Day 20 – Perspective

“The personal life deeply lived always expands into truths beyond itself.”  ~Anais Nin

Many  of the emotions derived from fear can be traced back to having a limited perspective on life.  The narrower our perspective the better our chances of taking things personally, worrying, having anxiety issues, being racist, being control freaks, being bigots, making mountains out of mole hills, being moody, pouty or being downright miserable from a physical, emotional and spiritual point of view.

When you get right down to it, the less perspective we have, the more selfish and self-centered we are.  With a narrow perspective we are less likely to see another person’s point of view or have empathy in situations which  do not affect us.

The devil loves for us to only care about ourselves and our own little worlds.  He loves for us to be single-minded, narrow-focused and short-sited.  He loves for us to live in a world of “limits” where we think we have all the answers.

God encourages us to care about others.  God wants us to be open and broad-minded.  God wants us to see possibilities.  God not only has ALL the answers but His world has no limits and no end.

Years ago I was blessed with the ultimate “personal perspective keeper” in my son Jordan.

Jordan is developmentally disabled and although he is 27 years old, he functions at about the level of a two year old.  On several occassions throughout the years when satan is making a run to get in my head Jordan will quietly walk up to me, grab my hand, and look me in the eyes (he can’t talk but he speaks through his eyes) and I’m able to get things back in perspective pretty quickly.

Something I’ve learned about people like Jordan is they are built the way God intended for all of us to be.  Jordan is fueled by love and acceptance of others.  None of the crap satan tries to pull all of us “normal” people into ever affects Jordan.  He is immune to hate and fear.  Jordan sees life from God’s point of view.

I am so looking forward to the day Jordan and I are in heaven where I know he will be able to talk and understand what I am saying when I say “thank you son, for without you my life would have really been limited.”  I am anticipating his response being, “no big deal Dad I was simply being what God has called us all to be.”

How broad or narrow is your life these days?

Are you living in the shallow or deep end of life?
