“The truth is that there is nothing noble in being superior to somebody else. The only real nobility is in being superior to your former self.” ~Whitney Young
A couple of “book mentors” of mine; John Maxwell and Jim Collins have summarized leadership and the art of leading into 5 levels. Although both summaries are a little different, what each of them determine as the “Level 5 leading” represent distinct similarities.
Maxwell’s Level 5:Â People follow because of who you are and what you represent.
Collins’ Level 5: Level 5 leaders have a paradoxical combination of personal humility and professional will.
Both of these level 5’s are reached through the ongoing progression of learning how to care about others at least as much as you care about yourself combined with a dogged passion for learning more and more about what it is you are doing. (See my October 4th blog; “The C Words”).
Leading others effectively, whether it is a business or your family or a sports team, begins with leading and growing yourself effectively.

Luke 14:11, “For everyone who exalts himself will be humbled, and he who humbles himself will be exalted.”
