Daily focalPOINT – Success and a Name

Some people dream about success.  Others wake up and work hard at it.

I can remember years ago overhearing someone talk about why his kid wasn’t excelling in sports; it went something like this; “you have to have a name in order to have a chance at succeeding in sports at this school and my kid doesn’t have a name.”

What a cop out and I feel sorry for the poor kid who was told by his Dad he would never succeed because he didn’t have a name.  I can remember my kids, while going through school, being accused of having athletic success because of their name.  I knew that was B.S. because I was the one who watched them both work their tails off to achieve their dream of playing Division I college basketball.

From my standpoint the Meyer name is but a couple of generations removed from the time in my Dad’s life where as a child he lost his home during the great depression and his Dad and Mom had to work multiple jobs just to put food on the table.  My Dad tells the story of feeling inferior as a child growing up because he didn’t have much.

Once a Dad on his own, my Dad had a dream and it was to create a life for his kids where they wouldn’t have to want for anything and they would be able to chase their dreams and goals.  He along with my Mom worked hard to make that happen and my brother and I embraced the same work ethic and handed it over to our kids and hope they keep the momentum going.

Often the difference between success and failure is one more try and “tries” only come through hard work regardless of the name.
