Daily focalPOINT – Sales

“If you are in sales and only enjoy doing what you are doing when you close a deal…you are going to be miserable most of the time.”  ~Jay Meyer

Over the years I closed many deals but no deal was more gratifying than when I finally closed a deal with a customer I had first called upon almost 20 years prior.  This actually took place in 2007.

I was in a business where the average sales cycle was about two years and I learned the definition of patience early on.  Sales is a profession where you will always lose more sales than you will gain but the key is to never lose focus.

Sales involves so many things.  Great sales people must not only enjoy the “hunt” but must be creative in developing the “hunt.”  Attributes of relationship building, patience, calm, focus and emotional intelligence are huge but one characteristic many don’t think about is the ability to treat non-customers as if they are already a customer…the reason I landed the account noted above…(also see the Ann Landers quote from yesterday’s focalPOINT on Respect).

If I couldn’t be the business of first choice I still worked hard to be my future customer’s business of second choice.

Sales is a process, it is not an event.
