Daily focalPOINT – Leading Begins and Ends With Me

Leaders can only lead others as far as they’ve led themselves.  Therefore if you want to be a great leader you must never stop growing your leadership capabilities…

If you read the quote above and thought, “well I am not a leader so this doesn’t pertain to me” …please read on.

Every human being, unless totally limited by a disability, leads or will be called upon to lead at some point in their life.

We all know President’s, CEO’s, Coaches, General Managers etc… are in leadership positions and they are responsible for leading.

What we often forget about is Moms lead, Dads lead, Grandpas lead, Grandmas lead, Aunts lead, Uncles lead, Friends lead; in essence anyone in a position where another person looks to them for help is in a leadership position.

I can remember years ago when I was responsible for a team of 200 people thinking, “if we could develop more leaders in our organization than followers, we would be a much stronger company.”  I encouraged teenagers as well as part time workers on AARP (Fred S. I hope you are reading this) that they could lead and if nothing else they could at least learn how to lead themselves as we have a world so willing to turn us into followers.  Today I know our leadership exercises served as a key component in allowing us to crush the competition.

Leading begins and ends with you…choose to never stop growing as a leader and those you are leading will never stop growing too.
