Daily focalPOINT – Changing Behavior

“The chains of habit are generally too small to be felt until they are too strong to be broken.”  ~Samuel Johnson

I love this quote by Samuel Johnson and it is so true.  Often we find when we still have the ability to break a habit we usually don’t have the desire to break it, but when we get a desire to break the habit our ability is often gone due to the habit becoming an addiction (i.e. the habit has control of us).  St. Augustine wrote; “Habit, if not resisted, soon becomes necessity.”

If you are thinking there is something you need to stop or start doing then you probably need to stop or start doing it.  I will caution you though if you think simply “stopping” or “starting” is the only action step needed.  Old habits need to be replaced with new, more effective habits.  Thus my favorite quote from my mentor Vic; “there are only two steps in creating a new habit, start and continue.”

The 12 Steps” as well as Steven Covey’s “7 Habits of Highly Effective People” are great systems to help change habits for good.  Changing a habit involves a change in belief which involves a change in thinking which eventually involves a change in behavior…yes it takes work.

Trying to talk your way out of something you’ve behaved yourself into is a sign of insanity…I write from experience.  🙂

We just completed our 2nd “3rd Thursday” meeting at our Barn yesterday evening.  The 3rd Thursday group is a group of people with a desire to take their lives to the next level.  If you are interested in joining us, the next meeting is November 15.  The session begins at 6:45pm.  There is no charge other than the cost of the materials which is $20.  Email me if you are interested.
