Gratitude*

“The struggle ends when the gratitude begins.”  ~Neale Donald Walsch

Twenty-seven years ago on this day I was struggling to stay sober even though I had close to three months of continuous sobriety under my belt and was going to at least one AA meeting a day.  I recall walking into an AA meeting in Dayton on November 1, 1987 and remember the person who was chairing the meeting informing us that November was “gratitude month.”  I remember thinking to myself something along these lines; “what do I have to be grateful for,  I am at the pits of my life and heading to jail; what a bunch of bull.”  But I decided to stay and listen and I am grateful I did.

Over the next 30 days I heard more discussion around gratitude than all the other days of my life combined and found a big part of living sober and having serenity in spite of the circumstance, is the ability to find something to be grateful for.

I am so grateful for my first November in AA as I truly believe “gratitude month” helped me get my head out of my butt so I could begin seeing “the light” and making positive change in my life.

My efforts will be focused on gratitude during the month of November’s blogs.

So buckle up your seat belts and join me for a “gratitude ride.”

…the struggle does indeed end, when the gratitude begins…I write from experience.
