Crushing Fear – Day 29 – Distractions

You can't do big things if you are distracted by small things.

— Unknown —

Fact

The devil loves to distract us.

Distractions cause us to go off course, or for some people, to never have a course.

Question

Why is our world so easily distracted?

I believe a lot of us suffer from FOMO (fear of missing out). And if we aren’t careful, our fear of missing out will turn into an addiction where we escape our life by living in the imaginary world called social media.

I have to believe no one was happier about Apple selling its billionth iPhone a few years ago than the devil.  The devil loves for us to be distracted, and every day our society seems to become more and more distracted.

Solution

There is so much noise going on around us…if we choose to listen to it.

What distracts you?

What gets in your way of treating time like the valuable asset it is?

Do you realize you have a choice on whether or not you want to be focused or distracted?

People often marvel at how disciplined I am.  When I hear that, I chuckle to myself because the reason I am so disciplined is that I am easily distracted.

My Secret Formula for staying focused.

  1. I go to bed early (10ish), and just before falling asleep,  I thank God for today and turn tomorrow over to Him.  (The start of a perfect day begins the night before.)
  2. I get up early.  Early enough to have forty-five minutes with God and at least an hour to exercise.  The time I spend with God involves scripture reading, listening, and prayer–which includes turning my plan for the day over to Him.  Vigorous exercise is the best way to calm my mind right out of the gate in the morning.
  3. I talk with God throughout the day, and when I get distracted, I ask for Him to get me back on course.

This works great as long as I work it.

Romans 12:2, “Do not be conformed to this world, but be transformed by the renewal of your mind, that by testing you may discern what is the will of God, what is good and acceptable and perfect.”  (ESV)

Reflection:

What beliefs, thoughts, and actions cause you to struggle with distractions?
