Crushing Fear – Day 22 – Insignificance

Success is when I add value to myself. Significance is when I add value to others.

— John Maxwell —

This is day twenty-two on our Lenten journey of facing and crushing our fears.

Enough is Enough

Another fear we often experience is a fear of insignificance or feelings that we aren’t “enough.”

We live in a world where comparing ourselves to others has become the norm, and when we compare ourselves to others, we forget who and whose we are.

Social media has created a warped sense of significance these days.

Those who live in the imaginary world of social media believe the more likes, views, followers, and shares we garner, the more significant we are.

#WRONG!!!

I’ve lived with significance for forty years, and she rarely appears on social media and never toots her horn. In fact, for the past thirty-seven years, I’ve watched my wife lay her life down to care for our son Jordan.

Little did Lori know that the two days she spent in the hospital recuperating from Jordan’s birth were the last two days she would have to herself.

That, my friends, is an example of someone not appearing significant in the world’s view but being exceptionally significant to God.

My View

From God’s point of view, true significance comes down to how well we’ve utilized our talents to help our brothers and sisters in need.

God gets a big smile every time we do something for another person without telling anyone about it.

Solution

Help someone without telling the world. Acts like these are pretty significant through God’s eyes.

One “like” from God is worth significantly more than ten million social media “likes” from the world.

#TRUTH

James 1:22 (NIV), “Do not merely listen to the word, and so deceive yourselves.  Do what it says.”

Reflection:

What beliefs, thoughts, and actions cause you to struggle with living out the true meaning of significance?

Additional Scripture to read and reflect upon:  2 Corinthians 9:6, John 12:24, Hosea 10:12

Gina is a great example of someone who truly leads a life of significance by serving the healthcare needs of the less fortunate. Check it out here.
