Crushing Fear – Day 11 – Excuses

He that is good for making excuses is seldom good for anything else.

— Ben Franklin —

Many years ago my college basketball coach said something to me that I’ve never forgotten; “Excuses are like our hind ends, we all have them and they all stink.”

Another habit born from fear is excuse-making. We’ve all been there–something doesn’t go our way, we fear we aren’t going to “look good” to the outside world, so we make an excuse.

Or a more personal example for me–life gets really difficult so we have an even better excuse for drinking and drugging. This was me after our second child was born with severe challenges. My excuse for using drugs darn near killed me.

Character is the ability to handle reality.

When we make an excuse we avoid reality and every time we avoid reality we weaken our character. The devil loves for us to avoid reality and weaken our character.

If you are one who gets caught up in the world of excuse making try facing your problems head on and prayerfully taking God with you.  The answer to all of our problems are usually found inside the problems…I write from experience.

1 Thessalonians 5:16-18 (NIV), “Rejoice always, pray continually, give thanks in all circumstances; for this is God’s will for you in Christ Jesus.”

Reflection:

What beliefs, thoughts and actions cause you to struggle with excuses?
