COVID and GODS

Nothing teaches us about the preciousness of the Creator as much as when we learn the emptiness of everything else.

— Charles Spurgeon —

Last week us Buckeyes from Ohio sadly got word that there was not going to be Ohio State football in 2020.

I’ve been an Ohio State football fan since I was nine years old and can vividly recall watching the amazing national champion ’68 Buckeyes as often as I could on the old black and white TV in our family’s living room.

1968 was also the year that I converted from a Cleveland Browns fan to a die-hard Cincinnati Bengals fan…and I mean I’ve died hard for years following my Bengals. 🙂

I’ve always been a Cincinnati Reds fan and recall my brother’s unsuccessful attempt at getting Pete Rose’s autograph in the parking lot of old Crosley Field all the way back to 1964. Rose said some not so nice words to my brother who was eight years old at the time.

It’s interesting that Rose always was and always will be my favorite baseball player because he had the most competitive attitude of any athlete I ever watched play the game…an attitude that my brother uncovered right before our very eyes. 🙂

So what’s my point?

I’m disappointed that I will not get to watch my Buckeyes play this fall and doubly disappointed that my Reds are playing a partial season and are currently not playing because a player tested positive for COVID-19.

I’m keeping my fingers crossed about my Bengals having a season…but not holding my breath.

As noted in Spurgeon’s opening quote, none of this means anything in the grand scheme of things but for some people, their sports teams are their gods.

I used to be that way…and then I found Jesus.

The cool thing about having God as my one and only God is he doesn’t make errors, throw interceptions, get injured, or stop playing because of a nasty virus.

He’s always present, does everything right, and never lets me down.

Exodus 20:3, “Thou shalt have no other Gods before me!”
