Three choices in life...Give up. Give in. Give it all you've got.

— Unknown —

imageIt’s not difficult stopping an old habit and starting a new one.  The difficulty lies in staying stopped or started.  As I’ve said many times; “there are only two steps in changing a habit; start and continue.”

We just completed a seven week process of starving an old destructive habit and/or starting a new productive habit.  It is crucial to keep the momentum going.

One of the reasons I struggle with Christians and their Lenten season is oftentimes they give something up during Lent and pick the old habit right back up when Lent is over.  This is not the case with all Christians but I’m guessing it happens more than it doesn’t happen.  It reminds me of a friend who used to give up alcohol during Lent so he could prove he wasn’t an alcoholic and he became a bigger butthole during Lent than he was when he drank…”here’s your sign.”

Lent isn’t a time to prove anything to God or to the world.  It is a time to grow closer to God by ridding ourselves of thoughts, words and deeds that prevent us from being all we can be for Him to use.

God doesn’t want our promises or our sacrifices.  He wants US.  Not a piece of us, not 40% or 51% of us, but our entire being.

So, for those of you who participated in HabitFast:  Are you going to continue?

1 Samuel 15:22; “But Samuel replied:  ‘Does the Lord delight in burnt offerings and sacrifices as much as in obeying the Lord?  To obey is better than sacrifice, and to heed is better than the fat of rams.”  (NIV)
