Over the years, I’ve been blessed to coach many people in various leadership positions.
A part of the leadership coaching process involves having those I coach to do an inventory of their life. During the inventory process, my clients complete a couple of assessments that indicate their God-given strengths.
I worked with a young leader a few years ago and asked him to share his strengths. He had taken the Gallup StrengthsFinder Assessment.
It’s important to note that this particular client was struggling in his professional life.
After looking at his strengths, I inquired how well he was leveraging them in his professional life.
Then, after giving his strengths a rather intense review, he looked at me, shaking his head, and with a frown on his face, said, “This is why I hate my job, isn’t it?”
Facts
He found his God-given strengths were not being utilized in his professional life. On top of that, he also discovered his values (as noted in the inventory of his life) were not aligned with the organization’s values.
This is a recipe for hating your job, and when we hate our job (where we spend most of our waking hours), we tend not to like other aspects of our life, which was reflected in this client’s inventory.
We then spent the next thirty minutes discussing what he needed to do to move on to a new job and life. He suddenly began to visualize a new future he never knew existed, and with this new vision came an energy he had not felt in a long time.
Moving from misery to joy is not easy, but it is worth the work.
God didn’t wire us to be miserable…but the devil loves it when we are.
Question
Are you spending most of your waking hours in joy or misery?
If you are miserable and can’t change “it” and are unwilling to accept “it,”…move on…you’ll have no regrets.
Ecclesiastes 8:15, “And I commend joy, for man has no good thing under the sun but to eat and drink and be joyful, for this will go with him in his toil through the days of his life that God has given him under the sun.” (ESV)
