BHAC Day – 5 – Foundation

If you have built castles in the air, your work need not be lost; that is where they should be. Now put the foundations under them.

— Henry David Thoreau —

Some of you know that I jumped back into the long term care pharmacy industry about a year ago.

Due to some changes created through the Affordable Health Care Act, I saw opportunity for pharmacy to play an even more important role in the health care of Americans.

I have a picture in my head of what the long term care pharmacy industry will look like five to ten years from now, but the picture is very much a ‘castle in the air,’ as Thoreau notes in the opening quote.

Currently I am working on building the foundation under that vision, which I know will take a few years.

Sometimes we create a BHAC (Big Hairy Audacious Commitment), that requires extensive work on its foundation. This takes time.

Maybe your 2019 BHAC is something you’ve tried and failed at before. Achieving a BHAC you’ve been unable to accomplish in the past, often requires a change in thinking.

Spoiler alert–it’s impossible to change, if we continue to believe the same bullshit stories the committee in our head feeds us. 🙂

Perhaps your 2019 BHAC involves committing to building a new foundation of thinking for the first 3 months of your journey.

Ways to change your thinking:

  1. Make a list of all the negative bull crap that rolls around in your head throughout the day. Commit to ‘talking back’ at that thinking every time it rears its ugly head. I’ve been caught talking back at the committee in my head on more than one occasion and I’m sure those who’ve witnessed it thinks I’m a tad bit off…sometimes you need to fight craziness with craziness.
  2. Spend time each morning turning ALL of your thinking over to God, asking Him to give you the willingness and desire to create the thinking it’s going to take in order to achieve your BHAC.
  3. Read books related to your BHAC.
  4. Eliminate social media and the news while changing your thinking. Nothing puts BS in your head faster and more permanently than those two tools of the devil.
  5. Hang around/connect with people who’ve changed their thinking.
  6. Track the progress of your thinking prior to going to bed each day.

Go for It!
