BHAC Day 11 – It’s The Plan Stupid

A goal without a plan is just a wish.

— Antoione de Saint-Exupery —

A couple of weeks ago a friend asked me what played the most crucial role in conquering my 2018 Ironman triathlon BHAC.

After some thought, I told him, “The plan. If I didn’t have a solid plan, there is no way I could have conditioned my old body to take on 140.6 miles in one day.”

I believe the most critical part of trying to accomplish anything new, is putting together a solid plan, and then assuring the execution of the plan by putting together weekly plans.

During my Ironman Maryland training, every Saturday or Sunday, for thirty weeks, I mapped out my training plan for the week which required me to schedule my training around my responsibilities at home and at work. This discipline allowed me to accomplish about 85% of the training plan, which allowed me to accomplish 100% of my BHAC.

Each year in late December and early January, the fitness industry sells billions of dollars of running shoes, training equipment and the latest and greatest clothing that barely gets used as millions of people make ’emotional,’ fitness-related, New Years Resolutions. Don’t get me wrong, if you are runner, the right shoes are critical, but they will not turn you into a better runner. Only a plan focused on making you a better runner AND the execution of that plan–will make you a better runner.

Have you figured out what your BHAC will be for 2019?

If so, have you created a plan for how you will accomplish it?

Get that plan ready prior to December 29 and then on the 29th or 30th (Saturday/Sunday), create a plan for your first week in your pursuit of conquering your 2019 BHAC.

BTW…Twenty years ago I had a business coach who helped me start the discipline of writing down a weekly plan on Saturday or Sunday. I’ve continued that practice to this day and several years ago added an additional step where I prayerfully turn the plan over to God for His help in executing it. This practice has turned a lot of ‘wishes’ (see opening quote), into reality.
