Grit and Bear It – Day 1 – Outfoxing Birds

Grit is faith in action—showing up, pressing on, and trusting God when quitting would be easier.

Reflection

A few years ago, I found myself drawn deeper into the world of birds and birding. Living in a wooded area, we’re surrounded by an incredible variety of species. Over time, I’ve learned that the right combination of feeders and food can attract the birds you want—and keep the troublemakers away.

After five years of trial and error, I was close to the perfect setup. Then came the starlings—relentless and hungry, devouring my suet like it was their personal buffet. But with a bit of research and resilience, I found the solution: upside-down suet feeders. The birds I love can use them. The starlings can’t.

Why am I sharing this with you? Because this unexpected struggle reminded me of something deeper: grit and persistence matter. Whether it’s birds or life, a breakthrough often comes just after we want to give up. That’s why I’m dedicating June to reflecting on these two powerful traits.

God doesn’t call us to an easy life—but He does call us to endure, to press on, and to trust that the harvest will come in due time (Galatians 6:9).

Soul Search:

What situations in your life are causing you to want to give up? What can grit (knowing there is something worth fighting for) and persistence (the willingness to keep fighting) do for you?

Galatians 6:9, “Let us not become weary in doing good, for at a proper time we will reap a harvest if we do not give up.”
