Flashback to twelve years ago…
My business had recently been acquired by a larger entity and I was walking into the office of my new boss and what to my wondering eyes should appear but five dusty notebooks with their two-inch wide spines differentiated by years.
I asked my boss if the notebooks were strategic plans and he concurred that they were. He pulled the most recent one from the shelf and began leafing through several dozen pages of strategic hyperbole and then closed it and we never discussed it again.
I knew it was hyperbole because for years I had led our team through the strategic planning process and knew that “less was more,” when it came to strategic planning. I always had a goal of never having more than four pages summarizing the plan and the last two pages contained the key components of the plan.
And so goes most businesses and individuals when it comes to setting goals and creating plans to achieve them.
Why do we have so many epic fails at the achievement of New Year’s resolutions? I’m glad you asked.
- Our goals are too ambitious and plentiful.
- We don’t create space in our lives in order to achieve the goals.
A couple of tips in goal setting.
- Keep it simple. Less is more. What has been knawing at you? You know what I mean. That one thing you keep saying to yourself, “I need to do this.” For me, it is a podcast. I’ve been dreaming and thinking about it for two years; this is the year I get it done.
- Once you’ve determined what it is–WRITE IT DOWN in a place you will see it early and often on a daily basis.
- Â Note what you need to stop doing in order to create space for this new goal.
- Â Pray about your new goal at least daily.
More nuggets of strategic wisdom will be arriving in tomorrow’s blog.
Proverbs 16:3, “Commit your work to the Lord, and your plans will be established.”
Proverbs 16:9, ” The heart of man plans his way, but the Lord establishes his steps.”Â
2 Corinthians 1:12, “For our boast is this, the testimony of our conscience, that we behaved in the world with simplicity and godly sincerity, not by earthly wisdom but by the grace of God, and supremely so toward you.”
