Listening takes action…

Proverbs 1:33, “But all who listen to me will live in peace, untroubled by fear of harm.”

There are times in our lives where we think we are listening to God and we really aren’t. The litmus test can be found in the Proverb above. God promises us if we listen to him (wisdom) we will live in peace. If you say you are listening and you are not having peace, and filled with fear…well you fill in the blanks.

Listening requires the ability to first seek out His wisdom (willingness) and then secondly to understand it (discernment). Seeking his wisdom comes through prayer, study and worship. Understanding His wisdom comes through meditation and interaction with other wise Christian counsel.

There is a third and final step to listening and that is putting to work what God wants us to do and sometimes it is the ultimate form of listening. That comes through our work in helping and bringing others to the light; whether it be at home, in the workplace, in the church or out in the “streets.”

There have been times in my life where the only place God can reach me is when I am helping others. I pray, I worship, I meditate and I seek counsel and I am still a mess. I have yet to not find God’s wisdom when I help others.

Moral of this story…it is awfully hard to seek and listen to God’s wisdom when you are immersed in self. Getting out of yourself and helping someone in need often opens the mind to what God is trying to get us to do and that in turn creates peace.

You know Jay, It kinda confirms what Rick Warren tells us in the opening statement of his book “Purpose Driven Life”- It’s not about you- I experience the same dilema. If I am left to my own thoughts long enough I can convince myself that it’s o.k. to act out. That’s why it is so important for me to be in the word at the beginning of each day along with prayer. Just to get my head going in the right direction. But I also have to use that word. Putting it to work. Wisdom is knowledge put to use. I need to serve. I gain more knowledge through serving, Oh and incidently, along with that serving comes His Blessing. A double blessing- I gain more knowledge and wisdom and I stay sober. How cool is that?
    Have a blessed day!
