Alaska Trip – Day Seven

Obscure/Relevance Topic:  Journey

As I peer out the window from my morning breakfast/devotion space I am reminded of the word journey.

We are all on a journey.

Many of us become too busy too embrace it.

I’ve seen lives and families destroyed because of people placing so much time, energy and focus on a destination which may or may not ever come to pass.

Don’t let a fixation on a destination blur your ability to experience the journey…IT’S THE JOURNEY STUPID!

I’ve reached enough destinations in my life to know they are transient and fleeting.  I’m not saying they aren’t important but I would wager to say they are overrated.  The various journeys leading to them have made me who I am and who I’m becoming…there is always more ground for me to cover.

I know I will never “arrive.”

Journey trumps destination every day of the week.

DSC_6726Raising kids is definitely a journey where the “destination” is actually a step into a new journey as the kids move on and create their own journeys…with the exception of Jordan..our journey with Jordan is more of an adventure than it is a journey.  🙂

Leading a business was and is a journey.  The most vivid images I have of my pharmacy journey entails the team and the experiences we shared along the way.  I do not recall any particular destination while leading the business.

The same holds true for my basketball career…the championships were great but celebrating/strategizing with the team and coaches through all the ups and downs was even greater.

In a month I receive a token marking 29 years of continuous sobriety.  The token does not represent a destination it represents 29 years of a journey.  I’ve seen many who don’t make it because they forget recovery is a daily reprieve based upon one’s spiritual condition.

In four months Lori and I will celebrate 33 years of living a journey as one.  I’m fortunate God put Lori in my life as my journey would have been so different and most likely much shorter without her.    I doubt I would be in Alaska writing this passage in my notes of obscure relevance if I didn’t have Lori as my journey-guide.
