Lead Yourself First

First say to yourself what you would be; and then do what you have to do.

— Epictetus —

Last week a young man I am mentoring was picking my brain on leadership.

We talked for an extended period of time as I gave him all the wisdom I knew with regard to leadership and I left him with my four favorite nuggets:

  1. Envision your future leadership state and work to grow into it. (Like the Epictetus quote above.)
  2. You can only lead others as far as you’ve led yourself.
  3. Before you can lead yourself, you need to know yourself.
  4. Your walk should always be louder than your talk…talk is cheap.

2 Timothy 2:2, “And what you have heard from me in the presence of many witnesses entrust to faithful men who will be ale to teach others also.”

1 Timothy 4:12, “Don’t let anyone think less of you because you are young.  Be an example to all believers in what you teach, in the way you live, in your love, your faith, and your purity.”
