The Divine Blocker

Last night our beloved Ohio State Buckeyes opened with a dominating win over Marshall.  I’ve always been a Buckeye fan but I especially enjoy watching them when they have someone on the team I feel a connection to.

Over the past 4 years our family has been rooting and pulling for Brandon Saine, the versatile tailback and captain for the Bucks.  Brandon is a Piqua, Ohio native and graduated with our developmentally disabled son Jordan…one of Jordan’s many claims to fame.

In fact when Coach Tressel visited Piqua High School a few years ago, Jordan came home with a picture of him and Coach Tressel as well as a an OSU coffee mug autographed by the Coach…amazing what Jordan can get done without saying a word.  🙂

Last night Brandon ran for over 100 yards on just 8 carries and had a couple of runs over 40 yards as well as 2 touchdowns.  Needless to say the Meyer household was all pumped up for Brandon as well as the Buckeyes.

The announcers, when describing Brandon’s running style, said he was a patient runner and followed his blockers quite effectively and when a hole would open up he was great at seeing the opening and in-turn utilizing his God-given (my words) gift of speed.

The greatest running backs are not only patient, fast, and have great vision, but they cannot run effectively without blockers.

Metaphorically speaking, a life run on self will without utilizing the “Divine Blocker” is often difficult and sometimes downright disastrous.

Although God will not run the ball for us or prevent us from slipping or being tackled; he will open our eyes to new “openings” and provide us with virtues we once thought were unattainable.   Paul reminds of this in Galatians 5:22, “but the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness and self-control.”

The virtues above are the Fruits received through the acceptance of Jesus and the gift of the Holy Spirit which then lives in us.  By accepting Jesus, we have the “Divine Blocker” living inside of us.

Utilizing the Divine Blocker will not guarantee us success in all we do but, just like a great running back, we exhibit the “Fruits” and maintain patience, peace and self-control, while the world is reaching out and trying to tackle us, and we begin to see holes (opportunities) our self-will blinded us to.

Choose to start your day by asking the Divine Blocker to lead the way and all of a sudden running the ball (i.e. living life) becomes much more enjoyable.

Go Brandon!  Go Buckeyes!  Go God!
