Reflection
I’ll never forget my AA sponsor, Vic, telling me, “Holding onto resentments is a surefire way to relapse.”
At the time, I was furious with someone who had completely thrown me under the bus when I sought help for my problem. Vic gave me my first assignment: “Pray for that person every morning for 90 days. Ask God to give him the same peace, joy, and happiness you’re striving for—and see what happens.”
I begrudgingly followed his direction, and somewhere along the way, the anger dissolved. What once felt like a crushing weight was lifted from my soul. That’s when I learned a vital truth: forgiveness isn’t about letting the other person off the hook—it’s about setting yourself free.
In sobriety and life, forgiveness becomes a form of spiritual housekeeping, clearing out the resentments that, if left unchecked, will drag us back into the darkness.
Forgiveness sets us free. Bitterness keeps us enslaved.
