Gratitude For Health

You don't realize how precious health is until it is threatened.

Reflection

Last Friday started before sunrise. I had a packed day ahead of me, ending with my annual trek to Toledo for an echocardiogram. Yes—Toledo. People laugh until they hear why: the technician there is the best I’ve ever encountered, working alongside an equally exceptional cardiologist.

Years ago, I learned a simple truth—the person behind the test can be just as important as the test itself.

But I digress.

At 5:30 a.m., while the world outside was still wrapped in darkness, I was already on my spinner bike. I queued up a Global Cycling Network (GCN) workout on my phone and started pedaling. Their sessions are brutal but short—just enough to make you question your sanity.

About halfway through, legs burning and lungs protesting, I caught myself chuckling. How many almost-67-year-olds are pushing this hard on a stationary bike right now? Probably not many.

So why do I do it? Why am I wired this way?

Because I have a heart condition that stays stable only when I keep that muscle working, exercise isn’t optional for me—it’s medicine. Exercise is also medicine for my mental condition, which becomes a bit shaky without it.

Every ride, every sweat-drenched workout, is my way of honoring the life and the body God has given me, one mile at a time…one painful moment at a time…one fighting through resistance moment at a time…one thinking I’m crazy moment at a time. 🙂

Your body is a miracle.

Every heartbeat is a gift.

Gratitude values what many take for granted.

Take care of what God has entrusted to you.
