Boldness Is Built in the Fire

You gain strength, courage, and confidence by every experience in which you stop to look fear in the face.

— Eleanor Roosevelt —

Reflection:

Boldness isn’t handed to you—it’s forged. Courage doesn’t grow in comfort.

Those truths hit me hard on September 15, 1987, the day I returned to our little village after five weeks in a chemical dependency treatment center.

I was one of our town’s pharmacists and had become addicted to drugs…not a good look for my reputation…extremely embarrassing…extremely humiliated…to say the least.

Shame whispered, “Stay hidden.” But I knew the only way to silence that voice was to face the fear head-on. So I walked through town, not with swagger but with my head held high, one step at a time, reclaiming my dignity.

I doubt anyone noticed or really cared…but I did.

You become brave by walking through the fire…not avoiding it.

Soul Search:

What fear are you being called to face head-on? What courage might God be forming in you through this?

“When you pass through the waters, I will be with you… When you walk through the fire, you will not be burned.” – Isaiah 43:2 (NIV)
