After Thoughts

The successful warrior is the average man, with laser-like focus.

— Bruce Lee —

Focus is a huge difference maker and can be enhanced by simply removing from your mind everything that doesn’t add to and/or align with your life vision.

Last week during a couple of coaching sessions I had with clients, I had to remind the clients that there is no bigger time waster than negative self talk.

Each of the clients got into “would have, could have, should have.” They were both having second thoughts about something they had done and/or said. There is nothing wrong with having second thoughts. But there’s a whole lot wrong with having third, fourth, fifth, sixth, seventh, eight, ninth, tenth or more “after-thoughts” about something.

I’ve done a lot of stupid things in my day and I’ve said some even stupider things but I would not be where I am in my life today if I hadn’t been able to constructively and immediately deal with my second thoughts.

My process of not having additional thoughts after my second thoughts involves taking three steps:

1.  I note in my journal what I learned from the experience and whether or not I owe someone an amends.  (There is something magical about putting our thoughts in writing.)

2.  I ask God to destroy satan and his lousy game of getting me to have multiple thoughts about a situation.  I have a standard line I use; “By the blood of Jesus satan be gone!”

3.  If 1 and 2 doesn’t work I share the situation with God and someone I can trust…Our minds are like bad neighborhoods, we shouldn’t go there alone.

Psalm 119:15, “I will meditate on your precepts and fix my eyes on your ways.”
