Unsung Heros…

Jordan with a couple of Unsung Heros...Tina is hooked to his right arm.

Luke 14:11, “For everyone who exalts himself will be humbled, and he who humbles himself will be exalted.”  (NIV)

The greatest thing that ever happened to me was hitting rock bottom on August 9, 1987.  The good Lord is always trying to get our attention and he found the only way to get my attention was for me to be lying flat on my back looking straight up at Him.  From that day forward, everything I once thought was important was stripped from me; with the exception of my family and close friends…but for the grace of God.

While receiving treatment at an inpatient facility for my drug and alcohol problem I can remember having a few, very important epiphanies, but one I will never forget;  it went something like this; “I will never ever judge another person the rest of my life as I have reached a depth in hell that has taken away my “right” to ever think I am above anyone ever again.”  For the first time in my life I felt humility like never before or as my friend Reed calls it “humbility.”

Because of my ongoing work of  trying to stay humble, I have grown quite fond of the many “naturally” humble people that work behind the scenes in order to make this world we live in a better place.   They do it willingly and without any fanfare or hype.  I’ve been blessed to be married to an Unsung Hero.

So, what is this all about?  As my friend Mike Bowie would say…”I am glad you asked.”

This week has been a pretty intense week for me as my new career continues to soar to new heights.  Lori has also been quite busy and of course our dear Jordan is always there requiring attention and care 24/7…I am not complaining, I am just stating facts.   Throw in a winter snow storm and a sick Jordan and I think you get the “drift.”  As I always told my troops at the pharmacy; I refuse to use the word stress when my life gets hectic.  Instead I choose to say “I’m Living!”  And this week I have been LIVING.  In the grand scheme of things I am very grateful to be LIVING and I’m not complaining, but I had to share all of this minor stuff with you in order to give you a better appreciation of what I am about to divulge.

This morning (Friday), Jordan’s school did not have transportation because of the winter weather so I decided I would drive him over.  He had only been to school one day this week and he needed to get around his friends and Lori and I needed a couple of hours to catch our breath.  When I took him into his classroom, there stood his caretaker/teacher/playmate-Tina with her arms wide open.  She said “Jordan, it is just you and me today and we are going to have some fun.”

I got in my car and started to fight back the tears because Tina and the many “Tina’s” of the world will never ever realize what a Godsend they are to people who have developmentally disabled children.   I mean it and know it…they will never, ever know how much they mean to us.

I am sure everyone who reads this has an unsung hero or two in their lives and this is my way to tell the world “Thank You Unsung Heros.”  And, although I normally do not solicit for comments on my blogs, please feel free to share your “Unsung Hero” with the world by posting a comment about him or her.

    Jay,
Thank you for the kind words. I have to say my unsung hero’s are the individuals like Jordy. They show me that no matter what your disability is, they live each day to their fullest. That day Jordy and I played basketball a few hundred times, took alot of walks around the building to visit people, crashed a birthday party and got to eat some cupcakes, and played with some blocks. We also read “Where the Wild Things Are”. I want to thank you for bringing him that day…it would have been a long boring day without him!!

Jay I am writing this because Tina is a friend of mine on Facebook. I went to school in west milton, and your wife went to school with my twin Brother & sister Kevin & Karin Ogle. My sister is actually Karin Thompson & lived in Covington p-hill for 30 yrs anyway, I too have a disabled son so I can relate to what you are saying about the unsung Heros. We are very fortunate to have them in our lives. The work they do and the things they do for our children are inmeasurable, and I know i can’t thank them enough, but I know in my heart they know we appreciate them. I truly loved your story and god bless you for all the good things you are doing. I also have dealt with alcohol abuse, and I admire you for telling your story. May your life continue to grow in the ways you want it to.

    Jay,
I love Jordy to pieces! 🙂 He is a blessing to the world and a blessing to all that meet him. You have an amazing family that embraces Jordy with love and strength. I worked with him and others at Easterseals and when I left I missed them so much. I am working with Jordy again and seem to be drawn to this profession. I love it and the people that I have and do work with. Thanks for the wonderful words and being such a wonderful mentor for all the people you have and will help in the future. God Bless you and your family!!
