“Nothing reduces the odds against you like ignoring them.â€Â ~Robert Brault
My first dream I ever had for my life was to become a professional basketball player. The “odds†for this happening were not very good. When I wrote this dream on a piece of paper I was skinny, weak, slow and pigeon toed. I ignored the “odds†and went to work on my dream and had two offers to play professional basketball overseas by the time I was 24.
When I finally confronted my addiction problem I was told that less than 5% with an addiction problem like mine would ever make it. I’ve now been sober twenty-six years.
In 1990 I was told by the Regional VP of our biggest competitor, if we didn’t sell our business to his, they would eventually put us out of business. Instead we worked hard and out grew his company in our region.
This has not been a “hey look at what I’ve done†blog. These are just a few examples where I’ve not paid attention to the odds because the odds are whipped every day of the week by focused and disciplined effort fueled by the God of the universe.
Sometimes I think there is no human virtue more powerful than simply keeping a commitment we’ve made to ourselves.
“I came to you in weakness—timid and trembling. And my message and my preaching were very plain. Rather than using clever and persuasive speeches, I relied only on the power of the Holy Spirit. I did this so you would trust not in human wisdom but in the power of God.â€Â ~1 Corinthians 2:3-5
