National Recovery Month – Day 24 – Use It Don’t Waste It

Turn your wounds into wisdom.

Reflection

About twenty-five years ago, God laid a vision on my heart to bring the Twelve Steps and Jesus together. Not long after, the church I was attending began focusing more intentionally on reaching the recovery community.

That opened the door for The Next Step, a worship celebration I would lead for the next ten years. The most powerful moments were when people shared their stories where Jesus helped turn their messes into messages.

There are chapters of our lives we’d never choose to relive. Recovery doesn’t ask us to pretend they were good or that they didn’t hurt.

Instead, we learn that God can use them.

Pain can grow compassion.

Failure can teach humility.

And addiction can give us an understanding that allows us to reach someone others simply can’t.

The scars don’t disappear, but their meaning can change. What once reminded us only of pain can become evidence of healing.

I’ve learned that God wastes nothing when we’re willing to place our story, and even the ugly chapters, in His hands.

Soul Search

How might God use one of my most difficult experiences to help someone else?
