National Recovery Month – Day 19 – Refill in Silence

God speaks in the silence of the heart.

— Mother Teresa —

Reflection

Prayer can easily become a one-way conversation: I talk; God listens.

Recovery taught me the value of silence, and every day I’m up before dawn, sitting in silence with Him, although lately it’s been a bit more challenging because we’ve brought a new rescue puppy into our lives. 🙂

Silence for me includes journaling, scripture reading, and prayer. Some days I’m better at it than others, but how I start determines how my day goes.

Step Eleven speaks of prayer and meditation—asking for knowledge of God’s will and the power to carry it out. Click here to see the 12 Steps of Alcoholics Anonymous in their entirety.

Sometimes we need fewer words and more listening.

Turn off the noise.

Put down the phone.

Sit quietly.

Breathe.

Listen.

God’s direction doesn’t always arrive dramatically. Often it comes as a quiet conviction about the next right thing.

When was the last time I became quiet enough to listen?

1 Samuel 3:9: “Speak, LORD, for your servant is listening.”
