National Recovery Month – Day 15 – Feelings Aren’t Facts

Feelings are much like waves: we can't stop them from coming, but we can choose which one to surf.

— Jonatan Mårtensson —

Reflection

When I first entered recovery, I was numb. I had feelings, but the drugs had buried them.

Then, as I began to thaw out, here they came…often in waves…sometimes they were tsunami-like.

I’m so grateful I had a sponsor as well as AA meetings all around me where I could show up, talk it out, and begin sorting through what I was feeling.

Because trust me, I had a lot to sort through.

I was one moody A-hole back then.

Feelings matter, but feelings aren’t always facts.

I can feel rejected without being rejected.

I can feel hopeless while hope still exists.

I can feel afraid while actually being safe.

Recovery taught me to acknowledge emotions without automatically obeying them.

Feelings are information, not instructions. We can ask: What am I feeling? Why? What is actually true? Then we can choose our next action based upon truth rather than emotional impulse.

Soul Search

What am I feeling today—and what is actually true?

“When I am afraid, I put my trust in you.” — Psalm 56:3
