National Recovery Month – Day 13 – Power of Pause

Between stimulus and response there is a space. In that space is our power to choose our response.

— Stephen Covey —

Reflection

One of recovery’s greatest gifts was learning that I didn’t have to react immediately to people and situations that rubbed me the wrong way.

Someone says something. Something doesn’t go my way. Fear rises. Anger flashes. My old instincts say, React! Emotional maturity says Pause.

That little space between what happens and what I do next can change everything. Take a breath. Say a prayer. Call someone. Ask what matters most.

We cannot always control our first thought or feeling, but we can become responsible for what happens next.

A phrase that helped me get through many of the overreaction challenges in early recovery was…How important is it, really?

Soul Search

Where would a five-second pause change the way I respond?

“Everyone should be quick to listen, slow to speak and slow to become angry.” — James 1:19
