Taking Action – Day 23 – More Important Than Fear

Courage is not the absence of fear, but rather the judgment that something else is more important than fear.

May 23 – More Important Than Fear

Reflection

This past week, I taught a leadership course that I’ve delivered dozens of times over the past 15 years.

The week before, I still run my fear-and-anxiety routine…two P’s: Prayer and Preparation.

After all those repetitions, I still get anxious. Fear of failure. Meeting a new audience. Nothing’s wrong with me…I think. 😊

I’m just human.

Fear is not the enemy of action. Managed well, it’s a useful companion.

It sharpens our attention, slows our recklessness, and signals that something actually matters, because we don’t fear losing what we don’t care about.

The problem comes when fear becomes the decision-maker. When it vetoes every brave impulse. When we rehearse worst-case scenarios so thoroughly, we forget to imagine the best case.

Moving through fear, not around it, not away from it, is one of the most important skills in a purposeful life full of meaningful action.

It means acknowledging the fear honestly, then choosing the more important thing anyway.

Pray so you won’t worry. Prepare so well that you have nothing to worry about.

It works.

I always write from experience.

Soul Search:

  • What specific fear is holding me back from something I know I should do?
  • What would I do today if I were not afraid?

“For the Spirit God gave us does not make us timid, but gives us power, love, and self-discipline.” — 2 Timothy 1:7 (NIV)
