Taking Action – Day 13 – Action Through Service

The best way to find yourself is to lose yourself in the service of others.

— Mahatma Gandhi —

Reflection:

Intentional action isn’t only about personal progress. Some of the most meaningful motion in our lives happens when we move toward someone else’s need, not because we have to, but because we’ve chosen to.

You often hear me say that we’ve been blessed with a son with special needs, and many years ago, I changed my thinking from “having” to provide care to Jordy to “getting” to provide care.

I work most of my days around that important opportunity to serve Jordy, whom I believe is one of the “least of these” Jesus refers to in Matthew 25:40. What a blessing!

Serving others has a way of reorienting everything.

When I am focused entirely on my own goals, I can become self-absorbed and anxious.

But when I turn my focus on giving Jordan the care and attention he needs, everything shifts.

My problems shrink.

My perspective widens.

My energy increases.

You don’t have to launch a grand initiative to serve. You can send the text. Make the meal. Sit with someone in their difficulty. Show up when it’s inconvenient. These are the actions that don’t make headlines but build lives.

Who could use your intentional presence today?

Soul Search:

  • Am I serving others out of genuine care, or only when it’s convenient?
  • Who in my life needs something I am uniquely positioned to give?

“Each of you should use whatever gift you have received to serve others.”  1 Peter 4:10 (NIV)
