Taking Action – Day 10 – Good Works for Others

The smallest act of kindness is worth more than the grandest intention.

— Oscar Wilde —

Reflection

My wife, Lori, recently crossed paths with a woman at a grocery store. Someone she had quietly helped years ago, when that woman’s child was in the NICU. The woman sought Lori out just to say she had never forgotten what she had done for her.

Afterward, Lori said something that stopped me: “The goal in life should be to have people remember you for what you did for them — not to them.”

It called to mind what the author of James wrote thousands of years ago: “Faith without works is dead.” I’d take it a step further: “Faith without good works is dead.”

We find Jesus. We accept Jesus. We trust Jesus. And then the call is clear…love others. But love without action is just sentiment. And the action must be selfless: quiet, uncelebrated, not about us.

James puts it plainly, and perhaps the best summary is this:

Good works, wrapped in love and faith, carried out with bold humility, is good for the world.

Soul Search:

  • What good works, wrapped in love, is God calling you to do for someone in the world?
  • When was the last time you did something for someone without telling anyone?

“As the body without the spirit is dead, so faith without deeds is dead.”  James 2:26 (NIV)
