The following reflection came to me after recently talking with someone whose brother has been battling addiction for over twenty years due to his continuous reluctance to fully surrender his will and his life to the care of God.
Reflection
Every morning, I begin the same way: placing my will and my life back into God’s hands. It’s a rhythm born out of necessity, shaped on August 9, 1987, when I first learned what a life driven by self-will truly looks like. It wasn’t pretty.
Surrender doesn’t weaken me; it frees me.
I’ve watched others hold back, afraid that giving everything to God means losing control of how their lives turn out…been there, done that, and damn near died because of it.
I’m not perfect–meaning just because I turn my will and my life over to God doesn’t mean I don’t take it back but today I know when that is happening because a low-grade anxiety begins to creep in with the enemy standing behind it whispering, “Do it your way, Jay, it will be more fun and better.”
Facts
Peace always follows surrender.
Anxiety always follows control.
When we release control, we don’t lose our life; we finally find it.

What area of your life are you still holding onto, and what would it look like to fully surrender it to God today?
Matthew 16:25, “For whoever would save his life will lose it, but whoever loses his life for my sake will find it.”
