Faith Over Fear – Day 29 – Fear of Discipline and Structure

Sometimes what we call freedom is really just fear of the structure that could change our lives.

Reflection

In my younger days, I was a free bird—or at least I thought I was. Nothing was going to change me. You could say I had a little Lynyrd Skynyrd in me. 😊

Then life hit, and it hit hard.

Over time, I began to see the value of self-discipline. Learning to live sober, caring for a son with disabilities, and striving to be a good husband, father, and worker all taught me something I did not understand when I was younger: structure can actually create freedom.

Discipline often feels restrictive, so fear tends to label it as punishment rather than training. But I have learned that the right kind of discipline does not trap us; it strengthens and frees us.

Each year during Lent, I give up something that seems to stand between me and all God wants me to be. This year, it has been social media. The freedom I have experienced through that discipline has been eye-opening.

Lent is a season of spiritual training in which small, faithful practices shape a stronger faith and a life free from dependency on anything other than God.

What structures or disciplines are you avoiding that could free you from being captive to the world, its people, possessions, and pressures?
