The Muscle You Can’t See

Mental toughness is built long before pressure shows up.

Reflection:

The other night, I was watching a highly competitive college basketball game between the Miami Redhawks and UMass Minutemen, when a potentially highly costly mistake happened with less than twenty seconds left: a freshman on Miami, who was in the lead, fouled a shooter behind the three-point line. I said out loud, “That’s a lack of mental toughness.”

That moment stuck with me and sparked this reflection and the next several days of writings.

Mental toughness isn’t a personality trait; it’s a trained response.

Like physical strength, it’s built through reps: choosing truth over emotion, discipline over comfort, and faith over fear.

Pressure doesn’t create weakness; it reveals preparation…that poor freshman was not prepared…luckily Miami pulled the game out and remained one of only two teams in the nation that haven’t lost a game this year. 🙂

Over the next two weeks, I will be writing about how to train your mind with the same purpose and consistency you train your body.

Mental toughness is a very important “invisible muscle.”

Soul Search

Where have I been relying on emotion instead of preparation?

Where is comfort crowding out discipline?

Where am I being led by fear instead of faith?

Romans 12:2, “Do not conform to the pattern of this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind.”
