Coach Daugherty, Jordy, Lori, and I at Coach’s reunion of teams in May of 2025.
Reflection
Last night I spent over an hour on the phone with my college basketball coach—time I never take for granted.
We talked about the early days of his coaching career, which began at Army under one of the game’s greats, Bobby Knight.
After we hung up, my mind went back to my first college practice. Beyond taking charges and diving for loose balls, what Coach called toughness drills, we spent nearly thirty minutes on one fundamental: developing our pivot foot…and we did that every practice for the first week.
The pivot foot is instrumental in becoming a great offensive basketball player.
That memory collided with the past few days of constantly pivoting due to unpredictable weather, and voilà, a blog was born. 😊
Weather changes. Plans unravel. Circumstances beyond our control force us to adjust.
In basketball, pivoting isn’t panic; it’s part of adjusting to the defense. When pivoting, one foot moves, but the pivot foot stays planted, providing balance and control.
Life works the same way. We may need to change direction, pace, or strategy, but our foundation must remain steady.
Faith, values, and identity become our pivot foot when pressure hits.
God doesn’t promise calm conditions, but He does provide a firm place to stand. When storms come, don’t freeze; pivot with purpose, grounded in what does not change.

What is shifting around me right now?
What must remain firmly planted as I adjust?
“He lifted me out of the pit… and set my feet on a rock, giving me a firm place to stand.” — Psalm 40:2
