Lent Mindset Day 20 – Mental and Spiritual Edge

What separates the good from the great isn’t just skill or speed—it’s the mental toughness to push one more rep, lock in when fatigue hits, and remain mentally focused when you are physically drained.

Reflection

This is my favorite time of year. The days are longer, daffodils are popping, golf has started, colorful birds are showing up at our feeders—and March Madness is here!

The opening quote came to me after I spent four days following 48 NCAA Division I men’s basketball games. Notice I said “following.” I actually watch the last four to five minutes of the close games.

I don’t just watch the end of the close games; I study them because it’s in the final minutes when the great teams rise above, and more times than not, they rise above because they possess a form of grit that comes through having a mental edge.

Most of you know I’m an old jock who lived for basketball. I spent hours shooting hoops and sharpening my game—back when my knees were much younger. 🙂

Beyond the court, the game taught me something more profound: the power of perseverance, which leads to grit and the development of a mental edge.

A mental edge is built when you continuously push through the times you want to quit. And now, watching the tournament, I can spot it instantly—the teams with players who have “it” (mental edge) and those who don’t.

So what does this have to do with Lent and following Christ?

When you combine faith and trust in God with all the “mental edge” attributes I mentioned above, you become more than a winner in the various games of life; you become an eternal winner for Him with a spiritual edge that cannot be broken…I always write from experience.

Philippians 4:13, “I can do all things through him who strengthens me.”

Thought for the day: The difference between good and great is often found in the unseen moments: early mornings, extra reps, quiet decisions to keep going when others coast, and putting ALL things in His hands.
