Reflection
The opening quote reminded me of a conversation I had several years ago with a fellow brother who is in recovery from alcohol addiction.
Over the past year, my friend has had to face some challenging health issues. He shared with me that at one point, he became so frustrated with the daily pain he was experiencing that he decided he was going to drink again.
My friend had been sober for 41 years.
Then he said, “After that crazy thought, I came to my senses and turned to God and asked him to ease my pain.” He then went on to say, “After my prayer, I can’t say my physical pain went away, but instead, God reminded me of all the additional pain I would bring back into my life if I decided to pick up a drink.”
No matter our challenges, how we handle them is a choice.
Romans 5:3-5, “More than that, we rejoice in our sufferings, knowing that suffering produces endurance, and endurance produces character, and character produces hope, and hope does not put us to shame, because God’s love has been poured into our hearts through the Holy Spirit who has been given to us.”Â
