Ought To Want and Do

Practical people get what they want. Philosophers know what they ought to want. Leaders know how to get what they ought to want.

Reflection

I found the opening quote in John Maxwell’s book, “Developing the Leader Within You 2.0,” and before I lose any of you who feel you are currently not in a leadership position and this doesn’t apply–think again.

We are all tasked with the responsibility of leading our own lives.

This being the start of a new year automatically puts this old coach into coach mode with a desire to help you do what you need to do to become who you want to be in 2024.

My interpretation of the opening quote is that the key to leading a life of significance is not about always getting what you want but getting what you want based on your key priorities, who you are, and what you stand for.

Three Questions

  1. What are your priorities?
  2. Who are you? What is your purpose?
  3. What do you stand for? What are your guiding principles?

Once you can list the answers to the above three questions and live them, you will begin getting what you ought to want.

Luke 12:34, “For where your treasure is, there will your heart be also.” (ESV)
