SMART is a Verb

You have to be specific if you want to be terrific.

“Our goals can only be reached through a vehicle of a plan, in which we must fervently believe and upon which we must vigorously act. There is no other route to success.” ~Pablo Picasso

Yesterday, I discussed the first step…reducing our goal to writing…in helping us vigorously act (see Picasso’s quote) as we work toward achieving our BIG-Big Imagination Goals for 2024.

The next step in the planning process is noting two or three key objectives we MUST accomplish to achieve our goal(s).

These Objectives must be SMART:

  •  Specific
  •  Measurable
  •  Achievable
  •  Relevant
  •  Time-Bound

  1. My first objective in completing a full Ironman was to find one that suited my competitive abilities. I gave myself two weeks (Specific & Time-bound) to accomplish this objective. I knew that to provide me with the best chance of becoming an Ironman, I needed to find a flat bike course that did not include an ocean swim. I am a below-average bike rider if it has hills and mountains, and I do not like swimming long distances in saltwater (Achievable & Relevant). There were no clear Measurable with this first objective other than completing it.
  2. My second objective was to research and find a training plan conducive to my schedule (Specific, Achievable, and Relevant). I gave myself two weeks (Time-Bound) to accomplish this objective. Once again, there were no Measurables with this objective other than completing it.
  3. Once I achieved the first two objectives, I was ready for the most critical objective–the execution of the training plan. My third objective was to train according to plan, six days a week, with an 85% accomplishment rate. This meant I always trained at least five days a week–85% of six days–(Specific, Measurable, Achievable, Relevant, & Time-Bound).

What is/are your BIG goal(s) for 2024?

Have you written it down?

Have you created two or three SMART objectives–to enhance your ability to achieve your goal?

Tomorrow, I will close out this journey by discussing the key elements in bringing your plan to life.

BE MORE in 2024
